Three main comments were made after my presentation that I considered.
1.) The font of the presentation did not match the tone of the message.
I’m not sure I agreed with this comment. The message was that there are hidden factors affecting the balance between crime and punishment, and therefore a font that may be considered “light” or “nice” may be exactly the font necessary. The factors affecting the balance are “hidden” so the font shouldn’t be provoking an uneasy tone.
2. Some of the zooming in and out was unecessary/took away from the presentation.
Looking over my presentation, I completely agree with this comment. The problem was in the beginning of the presentation mostly.
3. The balance scale at the end should be drastically skewed to show the effects the “extra factors” have on the balance.
After some thought on this comment, I actually disagreed. I felt the point of the presentation was that when all of these “extra factors” are considered, the scale is effected, but we don’t know how. Depending on each case, the scale can change balance in either direction. This is why I kept it balanced with all the factors tugging on it.
I did add a slide that compared the “crime and punishment balance” after looking at the black male/white woman case to address this comment.

Explanation of Circle Chart for PSet4
***Proper research has yet to be done, these positive and negative relationships are based off of personal judgment.***
Blue Connections- Represent a “positive relationship”. For example if “Female” and “Punishment” are connected by a blue line, this means that females are less likely to receive punishment then men. Notice that red and blue connections represent comparable opposites, so if female and punishment had a blue connection that means we are comparing females and males when it comes to punishment. Therefore you can expect a red line between “Male” and “Punishment”, or males being more likely to receive punishment. Another example: blue connection between male and education means males are more like than females to have a better education.
Red Connections- Represent a “negative relationship”. For example if “Female” and “Wealthy” are connected by a red line, this means that females are less likely to be wealthy. Notice that red and blue connections represent comparable opposites, so if female and wealthy had a red connection that means we are comparing females and males when it comes to wealth. Therefore you can expect a blue line between “Male” and “Wealthy”, or males being more likely to wealthy.
Purple Connections- Represent there being some relationship between the connected, but not enough breakdown was done to determine whether the relationship is positive or negative. For example in the case of race, there is a definite correlation between race and crime, but depending on whether we are comparing Caucasians to African Americans, or Hispanic to African American, etc, the correlation could be positive or negative.
Thickness of Connection Lines- You may also notice that the thickness of the connection lines varies. A thicker line simply means a stronger correlation, while a thinner line means a weaker correlation.
PSet #1
Visual Metaphor
Metaphor: My metaphor is a balance, as it is often a symbol of justice. Other factors “falling” onto the balance, can make it unbalanced.
Emotions: Some emotions I’d like the message to evoke is the feeling of being cheated, anger, betrayed (by the legal system), disheartened. I’d like the message to shock people by all the factors that go into our criminal justice system other than the crimes committed.
